Type 2 Diabetes, also called adult-onset;or non-insulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), your body's main source of fuel.
Insulin is a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells. When you have type 2 diabetes, your body doesn't produce enough insulin and/or is resistant to the effects of insulin. As a result, those with type 2 diabetes cannot maintain a normal glucose level; Untreated, the consequences of type 2 diabetes can cause numerous symptoms and medical problems.
Treatment of Diabetes
Even though there's no cure for type 2 diabetes, you can manage — or even prevent — the condition.
•Start by eating healthy foods, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight.
•By looking after your diabetes, you can also avoid diabetes complications that affect your eyes, brain, heart, kidneys, and limbs.
•The most important dietary changes you can make are to reduce your intake of carbohydrates (bread, pasta, potatoes, and rice), sweets, and animal fats.
•If diet and exercise aren't enough, you may need diabetes medication or insulin therapy to manage your blood sugar.
•There are many different medications that can treat and control high glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes.
•It is so important to also diagnose and properly treat other conditions that tend to be associated with and can worsen the complications of diabetes. These conditions include high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
